Suffocation – Suffocation
» 5 out of 5 Evil Faces
Okay, it seems as though it has been a long time waiting for this one to come out.
Though the time has finally arrived for the release of the newest CD from Suffocation simply entitled Suffocation. This one has been released by Relapse records.
I remember back in my youth, before I really knew anything about Death metal. I would listen to a local radio show and they would play various stuff (some I liked, some I did not) though everytime I would hear a song that I really liked it would turn out to be Suffocation.
So I bought their CD’s and can honestly say that they are one of the best DM acts from the 90′s. The riffs and intricate picking we’re unlike any other bands I was hearing. Of course there are bands that have mimicked their style over the years, but noone has ever really captured the true essence of this band.
Their early releases we’re a little raw and noisy, but the last 4 we’re recorded and mixed much more to my liking. Culminating with the release of the Despise The Sun EP, which is their best release so far.
Then they broke up for some reason (life, money, work… who knows) This was sad news to say the least.
So when they got back together a few years ago and released a new CD (Souls To Deny) I was very happy. Though to be honest this release was not my favorite. Though it was not all bad. It just seemed a little lackluster after all the years waiting for it.
Though now they have reunited once again to release another CD. This one they did not have time to even name. So they went with the band name for the CD. Maybe this means they think this release is just what the name Suffocation stands for or maybe they just could not string a few adjectives together to their liking.
Either way this is a great CD. It has everything to offer that all of their past albums have had. It’s heavy, fast, slow, slower. It has intricate riffing, excellent tempo changes and really gets the job done.
The only complaint I might have is the vocals are a little too understandable for my tastes. Beyond that this CD kicks some serious tail.
So as I always say, if you like death metal and have enjoyed Suffocation’s past releases go out and get a copy of the new one, trust me on this one, you will not be dissapointed.
