4 out of 5 Evil Faces

Once again time for another CD review. This time we’ll get right to it. The band? Italy’s Fleshgod Apocalypse. The title of the disc? Agony. The music on the disc? Bad Ass!!! That is if you like non stop full speed death metal with what sounds like old movie music soundtracks playing in the background.
Of course it isn’t old movie music. It’s keyboards, which is what gives this band it’s distinctive sound.
Now don’t get me wrong. There are lots of black metal bands that have heavy use of keyboards mixed in with the blast beats and double bass drums. Though I don’t really consider Fleshgod Apocalypse a black metal band. Or at least I didn’t until this CD was released the other day.
Now I can’t decide! :-0
It’s clearly death metal, but at times with all the keyboards it reminds me of old Emperor.
I saw this band live last November and was looking forward to seeing them. I was let down when they came out in Halloween costumes instead of just the clothes they happened to be wearing that day. Or maybe they always dress up like dead orchestral musicians.
Either way I think their music can stand on it’s own with no need for gimmicks or costumes. They play brutal death metal with a definite symphonic overtone. Once they get started it is unrelenting. The tempo does not vary much. The drums are quite triggery sounding but it all mixes well. If you liked their previous releases, be sure to check this one out.
