Devourment – Butcher The Weak
» 4 out of 5 Evil Faces
It has been a long time since fans of Devourment have had the opportunity to hear an entire CD of new material from the Dallas grind masters.
Though the time has finally arrived with the release of Butcher The Weak. Self released by the band, Butcher the Weak features the artwork of now vocalist Mike Majewski and contains 8 tracks.
There have been a few lineup changes, but for the most part the band is still the same members. They just switched around what they do.
As I eluded to above, Majewski (former bass player) is now the singer. Ruben Rosas is now the guitarist/backup vocals/bassist and they have added a new drummer Eric Park. I assume they will add a dedicated bassist at some point also.
A few years back Devourment was probably one of my favorite bands. It was the exact style of death metal I was looking for at the time. However, over the last few years my tastes have changed. I like a much wider spectrum of metal these days, from classic metal to thrash, death, black, progressive and so on, but somewhere deep in my musical heart there is still a place for raw grinding death metal. So, I was anxious to hear the new stuff! To say the least.
It did not disappoint! The intro sample alone is reason enough to buy this CD, but the grinding nightmare continues for about 30 more minutes! Combining awesome pit beats (to get the moshers out on the floor) vocals that no-one can understand (for all I know they are singing about flowers and kittens, but somehow I doubt that) blast beats and just pure raw aggression. This makes for one hell of a CD!
Anyway, no matter how good the CD is, it does not do justice to their live shows! If you get a chance to see devourment live, take my advice and get to the show however possible. then get in the PIT!!!
You can pick up a copy of this CD while you are there, or you can get it from their website Devourment.
