Anata - The Conductor's Departure

Here is a review of the newest CD from Sweden’s Anata. This is a great band, that I have just recently had the pleasure of listening to. We’ll, it has been awhile now but they still seem new to me.

Though this release is not all that new it came out way back in January/2006, but I just bought it over the weekend.

There’s a radio station here in Dallas that caters to metal fans, so I have had the pleasure of hearing this band on there a number of times over the years but for some reason hearing stuff on the radio just does not do it for me. It’s a great way to find new bands to check out and such but I have to get a copy of a CD and listen to it in it’s entirety (a few times perhaps) before I can really say that I like or dislike it.

I mean what can you tell by hearing a band play one song, other than if you want to hear more songs by them or not.

This is a band that I definitely liked. I wanted to hear more. Though they we’re never on the top of my list. They we’re one of those bands that I arbitrarily decided I could wait to buy any of their releases. Well I waited allright and when I looked up they had released 3 CD’s already and had a 4th one on the way.

Oops!

Anata has a little bit of everything to offer in their style. They are heavy, fast, slow, technical and brutal all mixed into one.

However, this release is not as good as some of their earlier ones, such as “Under a Stone with No Inscription” which I consider their best effort to date. Though “The Conductor’s Departure” is still a top notch metal CD worth adding to any metal collection. The pure brutality that this foursome musters, is mixed with melodic passages and kind of a somber tone, growling vocals and very technical riffs.

I guess they have always had melodic parts but it seems more evident on this release to me. Though as mentioned this CD does not lack any of what fans really want.

Death Metal!

The only real problem I have with this band is their songs are constantly changing (riifs, tempo and so on…) when they get a good groove going, they don’t keep it going long enough.

Anyway it is a long CD as well it plays for roughly 50 + minutes. So you get your moneys worth. Go get a copy and give it a spin and you can judge it for yourself.
