Q: Where is Pyrexia from?
A: Pyrexia is originally from New York City.
Over time the band has become more and more spread out. Lee and myself live in South Jersey, Justin lives in Delaware and our latest addition Jason lives all the way up in Rochester, New York. The band members are not exactly down the street from each other anymore.
Though, Pyrexia will always be known as one of the Founding Fathers of NYDM
Q: How long has Pyrexia been together?
A: I love when people ask this question because this is something alot of the newer Pyrexia fans don’t know. Pyrexia has been around since 1992, when they released the demo Liturgy of Impurity with Chris Basile and Guy Marchais being the founders. Then came the rare and out of print Sermon of Mockery album in 1993.
Which, if you wanna find it, I tell every one, just go onto Ebay. I just saw that cd sell on Ebay for $172.50! I have had alot of trouble sleeping since I saw that.
Q. How many members are in Pyrexia? Names? Instruments?
A. There are 5
- Chris (Founder – Guitars)
- Erick Shute (Vox)
- Lee (Guitars)
- Jason (Bass)
- Justin (drums)
Q: What is the age range of the band members?
A: I’m 22, Chris Basile is 33, I think, Lee is, I think 26, I have no idea how old Jay is, and Justin is I think 30.
Q: What (if any) is the message behind Pyrexia’s lyrics?
A: All of PYREXIA’s lyrics (with the exception of Sermon of Mockery), are based on real life events. For instance, “Bludgeoned By Deformity” is based on the Vietnam war, “Confrontation” and “GFYS” are about Louis Farahkan. “Closure” is about drug addiction, “Ode To Brinn” is a story about my father. He left when I was 1. He used to beat my mother, cheat, and was an alcoholic. Finally, after 9 years or so of me wishing his death, he finally choked and had a heart attack at the age of 48.
I used to wish I had a father until I noticed growing up that I’m lucky he left at the age I was or I would not be where I am today. Then at age 15, I went to his funeral and I was the only one there laughing while everyone else was crying. I was really amazed at how so many people were crying and saying prayers for the bastard, while all I could think was how he used to beat my mother. I fucking hated him! I pushed open his eye lid the morning of the burial because I wanted to just see his eyes 1 time before he was put under.
From that day, I said I would never be like him. I would never get addicted to drugs, never become a alcoholic, I would always treat my girlfriends with respect (when deserved) and I would never hit a girl. One day I hope to make a Pyrexia shirt that says the last line of the song on the back. “Now I Must Suffer With Your Blood Through My Veins”
Q: Who are your biggest influences?
A: I’d say Pyrexia doesn’t have any influences, except for the bullshit we deal with everyday. Like everyone else. When we sit and think about the stupid shit we face, it comes out in a musical form.
We have no desire to copy anyone else. That’s how I respond when someone asks me who our influences are. I don’t give credit, because I don’t channel the sound of another band to help write music. My reason for singing in Pyrexia is strictly to vent and take over the scene. If I couldn’t vent through Pyrexia, I would probably be in jail now for some horrendous crime. It’s more of a form of anger management or therapy.
Though, if you wanna know who I grew up listening to that got me into metal, Pantera, Sepultura, Marilyn Manson, Cannibal Corpse, Emperor, Dark Funeral. I’m a young buck!
Q: What is some of your favorite art, books (please include authors), & movies, if any?
A: I really like Borris, Jon Zig, fantasy and just straight up sickening art.
As far as books are concerned, I am reading “Think and Grow” Rich by Napoleon Hill right now. I also like “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki, and also some books by Ron LeGrande. I am really big into real estate investing, and network marketing.
As far as movies, I don’t really watch many movies, but, I’d have to say Gladiator, Braveheart, Pulp Fiction, Natural Born Killers, Not another teen movie, 40 Year Old Virgin was fucking hilarious.
Q: When will Pyrexia be touring? Is there a European tour planned?
A: When we finally get a good fuckin deal!
These labels keep saying how much they love the new shit with stuff like”Dude, I can’t take it out of my fucking CD player!” and “You guys rule!”, but no body is giving any No Brainer Deals.
We recorded the whole cd, we got the top notch death metal site on earth, all we fucking need is a label looking to give us a good deal with some tour support. Is that so hard to ask?
Q: In general, what has Pyrexia been up to lately?
A: Fuckin Shit! The last badass show we played was Spain last January. Pyrexia has never toured before, but the fans are always asking us to come around. It’s not our fault! If it’s not in the budget, and the booking agents don’t wanna book us (for whatever stupid ass reason) then I have no idea how we are gonna get out to these places without leaving our jobs, and risking a whole lot for something that we could easily get fucked on, doing it on our own!
Q: How do you categorize Pyrexia’s sound when people say “What kind of music is it” Death, Black, Metal, What?
A: Rexcore!
Q: Any Pyrexia members from other bands, or currently working on other projects?
A: Chris Basile is doing a side project with Dave Culross. I don’t know what name they are using now, but it was Pummel. Besides that, I have no idea. I stay out of that. My heart and soul is in Pyrexia.
Q: Any plans for the next CD yet, or are you still working on supporting the current release?
A: It’s all recorded, just waiting on a fucking label.
These labels have no idea what they are missing out on right now by not signing us. I swear to fucking God. We would be the hardest working band on their roster and would vouch to strictly dominate the entire scene. Plus it would cost them little to nothing, to throw us on a tour and let us show you what we can do.
We don’t need someone watching us, trying to get on us, because when we are given the opportunity to get on a roll, you won’t be able to stop us. It’s a mind set and lifestyle we are seeking. I am as relentless as a pitbull! I’d take out anything that dares try to step up and get in our way!
Q: Besides Pyrexia, what are the various band members into when not, touring, rehearsing, recording music?
A: Chris Basile is a Engineer at Carnegie Hall. In his spare time I know he enjoys the same things as any other middle aged man. Barbeques, hanging out with the guys, scoping out the bitches, Ya know.
Lee, is really into football, and just hanging with the guys. Everyone is basically into the same things, just living life to the fullest.
I’m the one who can’t sit the fuck still. I am always motivated, always filled with energy, and hungry for money.
I would rather use my time to plan my future financially and hustle. I’m not into sitting on the couch watching TV, or hanging out at a friend’s house playing horse shoes or pool or some shit like that. I got too much going on right now too waste my time like that. I’m a workaholic!
Q: What is your opinion on the current state of the world? (terror, the war in Iraq, and so on…)
A: I try to stay out of politics, but basically, I think this country needs to help itself before anyone else. Thats what other countries have their governments for.
As for immigrants, try going to their countries and demand healthcare and freedom to raise your flag in their country and see what happens!
Q: Anything I left out that you want to say?
A: Yes, thanks for the interview.
