Fuck The Facts
Q: Where is Fuck The Facts from?
A: We’re based in Ottawa, Canada, but most of us live on the Quebec side in Gatineau.
Q: How long has Fuck The Facts been together?
A: The bands started in 2001, before that it was a solo recording project of mine.
Q: How many members are in Fuck The Facts? Names? Instruments?
A: Currently we’re a 5-piece. Mel on vocals, Vil on drums, Steve on bass/backing vocals, Jean and myself on guitars.
Q: What is the age range of the band members?
A: 21-30.
Q: What (if any) is the message behind Fuck The Facts’s lyrics?
A: Mel is the main person behind the lyrics, but I give some input and suggestions. English isn’t her first language, so I try and make sure everything she writes gets across properly. We cover a lot of different topics, but it all revolves around stuff that affects us and we see in our every day lives. Lots of personal experiences go into the lyrics. Everything in this band is influenced by what we do on a daily basis; there’s no image we’re trying to get across and message that we’re trying send. But I still think many people can relate to what we write.
Q: Who are your biggest influences?
A: Band wise my biggest have been Mr. Bungle and Brutal Truth. I love bands that can evolve and change naturally and don’t confine themselves to what might be expected of them. There’s tons of great music out there, it’s always awesome to find something that really grabs you and inspires you to create something of your own. Trey Spruance and James Plotkin has been very inspiring to me personally.
Q: What is some of your favorite art, books (please include authors), & movies, if any?
A: I’ve really been slacking on reading lately, but I really got into Kurt Vonegut and Phillip K. Dick books. Though the movie versions of these authors’ books are usually horrible. My favorite movie is Naked Lunch, I love that movie. I’ve been copying DVDs while were on the road so I should have tons of new shit to watch when I get back home.
Q: When will Fuck The Facts be touring? Is there a European tour planned?
A: I’m sitting in a van on my way to Kansas right now as part of the Relapse Contamination tour. This tour runs till the end of September and after this we’re looking to possibly do some more US dates and then a western Canadian tour in November with some Northern US dates as well. We hope to go to Europe next spring.
Q: In general, what has Fuck The Facts been up to lately?
A: Mainly touring. Since we finished the album in March, we’ve been consistently staying on the road. This is our 5th tour this year. We got a new guitarist in August so we spent a bit of time working with him. But whenever we’re home we’ve been working on new stuff for the next recording. We have lots of new ideas and songs floating around, but we’re taking our time to make sure the next album is killer. That’s why we decided to start writing as soon as we finished “Stigmata High-Five”. Right now our priority is getting “Stigmata High-Five” out there and playing out as much a possible. We’re really happy with it, and think a lot of people will dig it if they give it a chance.
Q: How do you categorize Fuck The Facts’s sound when people say “What kind of music is it” Death, Black, Metal, What?
A: Our roots are definitely in grindcore, cause that’s really what got me started with this band, but we’re not a grindcore band. We have a strong experimental approach with a good dose of metal riffing. We usually call it “Bastardized grindcore”. We get described to many different bands, so the best way to get an idea is to check us out yourself.
Q: Any Fuck The Facts members from other bands, or currently working on other projects?
A: Not right now. No one really has time to do anything else outside of FTF, we’re pretty damn busy. Everyone besides Mel was in other bands, but that kind of fell apart when we kept getting busier with FTF.
Q: So the new CD comes out next week, what are your thoughts, feelings about this release?
A: We’re stoked, I think it’s the best thing FTF has ever done in all respects. We’ve been getting lot’s of really great feedback about it and I know it has already given us some new listeners and even some people that have written us off in the past have really enjoyed it as well. At the same time we can’t please everyone and don’t try to, but in my eyes it came out exactly how we wanted it, so I’m happy.
Q: Besides Fuck The Facts, what are the various band members into when not, touring, rehearsing, recording music?
A: At the moment nothing much. FTF really takes a lot of our time. When we’re not doing band shit, we’re basically just chilling with friends and relaxing at home.
Q: What is your opinion on the current state of the world? (terror, the war in Iraq, and so on…)
A: A lot of crazy shit has been happening, but living in a van most of the time I don’t really get up to date info. I usually catch it all at once and it can kind of be overwhelming. I try and live day to day and not worry about shit too much, touring itself is can be very stressful.
Q: Anything I left out that you want to say?
A: Thanx for the interview. “Stigmata High-Five” is in stores now and most likely if you live in North America we’ll be coming to a town near you. You can check our tour dates and other info on our site: www.fuckthefacts.com cheers!
