Devourment

Q: Where is Devourment from?
A: Devourment is from Dallas Texas.

Q: How long has Devourment been together?
A: Formed in 97, released a 3 song demo that was very well received in the underground scene. In 99 we recorded our first full length album called Molesting the Decapitated. Shortly after the release of Molesting, the band broke up due to personal differences. During that time the album became very successful and influential in the underground scene so after years of inactivity, we decided to get together and start writing music for the second album, entitled Butcher the Weak.

Q: How many members are in Devourment? Names? Instruments?
A: There are 4 members, Me on vocals, Ruben Rosas on guitar, Eric Park and we recently aquired and a new bass player named Chris Andrews, whos is amazing. The lineup is complete and stronger than its ever been.

Q: Over the years you have had alot of line-up changes, do you have a good stable line-up now that fans can look forward to seeing more from?
A: Absolutely, this is it man. What we have now is absolutely perfect for us. Over the years we tried with other lineups but it just never really worked or clicked, it was never really Devourment again. The current lineup is what we have been waiting for to happen for 6 years.

Q: What is the age range of the band members?
A: Ruben and I are the old fuckers in the band, Ruben is 30, I’m 31. The new member are some young bloods and bring the new fucken energy to the band, Chris Andrews is 22 and Eric Park is 20.

Q: What (if any) is the message behind Devourment’s lyrics?
A: There is no grand message behind the lyrics, we aren’t trying to make a statement or anything like that. Its entertainment, nothing more.

Q: Who are your biggest influences?
A: For me personally, Internal Bleeding from the earl 90′s, they blew me away in those days and remain a big influence on my song writing. Ruben is very big into European grind. We are both influenced heavily by the old school death metal and thrash scenes as well.

Q: What is some of your favorite art, books (please include authors), & movies, if any?
A: My favorite artists are Norman Rockwell, HR Giger, Brom, Carlos Huante, Todd Mcfarlane, to name a few. Im very influenced by comic book art, I love the style. I don’t really read man, it bores the shit out of me. I have read several books on serial killers though, that’s about all I can get into. I am a big movie fan, favorite of all time is the Lord of The Rings Trilogy.

Q: When will Devourment be touring? Is there a European tour planned?
A: We have some shows set up for summer and are planning several tours in the states. We want to get to Europe very badly but unfortunately we will not be able to get there until after December of 2006 because Ruben is not allowed to leave the country due to his probation.

Q: In general, what has Devourment been up to lately?
A: We recently got Chris Andrews on bass so we have been getting him up to speed on the Butcher the Weak songs. We are also working on the older songs so we can start getting ready to play some shows. We are also working on 2 new songs for a split cd with Godless Truth, Sarcolytic, and Sect of Execration. We are doing a new one and possibly an old Cannibal Corpse cover.

Q: How do you categorize Devourment’s sound when people say “What kind of music is it” Death, Black, Metal, What?
A: Its Death metal. In my opinion there are too many sub categories. The scene is lacking unification.

Q: Any Devourment members from other bands, or currently working on other projects?
A: Yes, our drummer Eric plays drums in a band called Hyperion and does vocals for a band called Rhome. Chris Andrews is former drummer of Kill the Client and has a one man project called Intestinal Fortitude.

Q: When was the new CD released and how can fans get a copy of it?
A: The official release date was November 11 2005. It is self released so you can get it from us and just about any label or distro should be carrying it as well. Its easy to find if you are looking for it.

Q: Besides Devourment, what are the various band members into when not, touring, rehearsing, recording music?
A: Ruben has a wife and a 2 year old daughter. We all work, Chris is a full time student. I do a lot of artwork on the side, I have been working on a lot of band logos, album covers and t-shirt designs. Than keeps me pretty busy.

Eric has 2 other bands so he’s pretty busy with music.

Q: What is your opinion on the current state of the world? (terror, the war in Iraq, and so on:::)
A: I think this world is fucked. I think the war is for the wrong reasons and I think the United States government makes the people from the US look very bad.

Q: Anything I left out that you want to say?
A: Just want to thank our fans for sticking with us for all these years and remaining loyal and positive with us. Thank you for the Interview.
