Daath - Daath

I had first heard of Daath I do believe around the time of their second albums release “The Hinderers”. I figured I would give them a shot considering all the positive reviews regarding the band and said album. I don’t know why but at the time I was not impressed. Maybe it was a simple matter of me not being in the head space to understand and enjoy what Daath had to offer at the time. Or maybe it had something to do with me confusing this bands name with the infamous “Death” of Chuck Schuldiner fame and expecting something out of this band (with it’s own identity) that they were not going to be giving me. Whatever the case. Continue reading

Rhapsody Of Fire - Triumph or Agony

Once again it is time for another CD review. It is not a new band, but they have a new name. Or at least a longer one. Italian opera metal masters Rhapsody have changed the band name to Rhapsody of Fire and have released another masterpiece.

As with all their CD’s Rhapsody takes you on a hour + long journey back into the days of old when men carried swords and fought against kings for freedom from slavery, oh and there are dragons too. I have heard alot of black metal bands referred to as epic in the past ( I am guilty of this myself) but Rhapsody (of Fire) define the term epic.

Mastadon – Blood Mountain

Mastadon-Blood Mountain

So I have been hearing what a great band Mastadon is for a few years now. Seems as though everytime I discuss metal with someone they tell me to check out this band.

Even though I had nothing against Mastadon, they we’re not on the top of my list. Thus I never really gave them much of a shot.

I remember hearing “Remission” at a friends a couple of years back, but never really gave it a good listen until about 6 months ago. I would have to say it is pretty good. Not at all what I had remembered them sounding like.

Not that I remembered them sounding bad or anything, I just remember it as being more death/grind metal in nature than what I would call it now.

Alas

Biography

Alas is a side project of guitarist Erik Rutan. Best known for his work with Morbid Angel and his solo band Hate Eternal. Alas is not anywhere near the same style as Erik’s aforementioned gigs. This is more on the progressive side of metal with female vocals and more melody. Not a bad album, but if you are a fan of heavier metal, this may not be for you.

    • Erik Rutan – Guitar

Ihsahn – The Adversary

Ihsahn - The Adversary Album Cover

Time yet again for another CD review, this time it’s the debut solo release from former Emperor front man Ihsahn, titled The Adversary. Released by Candlelight Records a few weeks ago.

I got this CD a week ago, and have listened to it quite a few times. Luckily for me or for this review anyway, I did because the first time I listened to it. I was not too impressed and turned it off.

This is not grinding death/black metal. It is typical Ihsahn (Emperor, Peccatum) more Peccatum than Emperor, but none the less it does remind me of later Emperor releases.

I originally heard this by viewing the video for the opening song Invocation. Not a bad song at all, so I bought the CD. It is pretty cool, but has many slow pretty parts.
